ABOUT THIS BOOK

An intrepid scientist and National Geographic’s 2007 Adventurer of the Year observes the changing ocean while rowing across the Atlantic.

In 2005-06, Julie Angus rowed nearly 10,000 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the first woman in the world to voyage across it from mainland to mainland in a rowboat. She was accompanied by her now husband, Colin Angus, as part of his epic expedition to circumnavigate the world by human power.

The 144 days spent rowing across the Atlantic offered Julie Angus, a trained biologist, a rare—and sometimes terrifying—perspective on the changing ocean. Angus documents the fish, turtles, sharks, whales, and birds that the slow-moving boat attracted. Yet despite this abundance of life, she also saw signs of the devastation of the sea. Sharks that were commonly sighted by ocean explorers barely a generation earlier were a rare sight while plastic debris was all too abundant.

During the journey, the couple was hit by four cyclones, including two hurricanes in what became the worst hurricane season in history. The boat was hammered by ten-meter waves and the duo trapped in the diminutive cabin for three days.

Rowboat in a Hurricane is a gripping adventure story of a woman’s difficult and courageous journey with her partner in a cramped vessel. More important, it is extraordinary record of one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems.
