Adventure Learning Initiative – School Rowed Trip Teachers Guide

The Teachers Guide is also available for download. Teachers Guide [Download - 55 KB]

The adventure learning initiative School Rowed Trip is designed to inspire and motivate students, while creating an interest in fitness, environmental stewardship, and the world around us.  This program offers multimedia materials, curriculum, and a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ component that allows students to make important logistical decisions in the expedition.

From March 1 to September 15, 2008 students can join in the adventure as Julie and Colin row and cycle 7,000 kilometres from Scotland to Syria.

This guide details how interested educators and parents can use the adventure learning initiative.

WAYS YOU CAN INVOLVE YOUR STUDENTS

Choose Your Own Adventure:

Students can be directly involved in important logistical decisions, which will enrich the expedition while offering kids the opportunity to be active participants.  Online technology allows real-time interaction when the expedition is in progress.

Every Monday we will pose a logistical question in the student corner, http://www.angusadventures.com/rowedtrip/students.html.  An example of such a question would be: “Should Colin and Julie voyage down the river with class II rapids, or take the adjacent bicycle path with very steep hills?”  Students will be invited to further research these options, and decide what the best action is.  They can then vote online and Julie and Colin will follow the decision of consensus.

Weekly Updates:

Weekly updates tailored specifically for kids will be included on the students’ page.  http://www.angusadventures.com/rowedtrip/students.html.  These updates will focus on the animals, geography, people, and interesting factoids of the regions the team is going through.  Updates will be illustrated with photographs and video.  Additionally the resulting adventures arising from the consensus decision of the previous week’s Choose Your Own Adventure decision will be detailed.

Other updates include:

Interactive Map:

Students are invited to follow the progress of Julie and Colin on the interactive map http://www.angusadventures.com/rowedtrip/map4.html.  This map can be zoomed to provide detail on the different regions.  The distance Julie and Colin are traveling is approximately the same as from Victoria, British Columbia to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

IDEAS AND RESOURCES TO BRING TO THE CLASSROOM

Angus Adventures Resources:

We have developed online resources for those wishing to learn more about adventures and expeditions.

Fitness and the Environment:

Exploration can help instill a sense of stewardship and environmental interest.  Additionally, healthy lifestyle choices are often good for the planet; riding your bike to school, healthy eating, and reducing household chemical usage are all actions that can help decrease your footprint.

For more information on how you can make a difference, please visit our environmental resources page: http://www.angusadventures.com/environment/index.html

Topics for discussion:

Many different topics can be brought into the classroom ranging from geography to history to environmental stewardship.  Some sample topics are listed below.

  • What different ways can climate change negatively affect our means of experiencing the world, e.g. how might a journey to the North Pole differ?
  • Name five healthy lifestyle choices that are also good for the planet?
  • What are six different human-powered modes of transportation?  Which of these can be used to get to school and how can risks associated with these activities be minimized?
  • Maintaining physical health isn’t just for those who plan to be explorers.  How might good health benefit a carpenter, a doctor, a salesperson, or an accountant?

Plan Your Own Expedition

A fun project for students is to plan their own imaginary adventure.  Divide students into teams of four and ask each group to come up with an expedition concept using our resources provided or through additional research.  Once the teams have chosen their expeditions, they will need to further research and plan their adventure.

If, for example, a group of students decides their expedition is to hike from Toronto to Whitehorse, they will be required to learn about the geography, climate, animals, transportation corridors, etc.  Using this information they will be able to outline the steps required to complete such an undertaking with regards to safety, equipment, provisioning, duration and route.

Another important component is physical training.  What would be the best exercises to prepare for such an undertaking?  Encourage the students to experiment with their training regime in the schoolyard or gymnasium.

PLAN YOUR OWN ADVENTURE CONTEST

We invite students and teachers who plan their own expedition to send their expedition reports to Angus Adventures.  The different expedition plans on basis of imagination, feasibility, logistical planning, and the training plan.

The deadline is December 31, 2008.  A panel of explorers will review the submissions and the winners will be notified on February 1, 2008.

Prizes will be given for the top three plans and the winning expeditions will be featured on the Angus Adventures website.

The prizes are:

  • Signed copies of all four of Colin and Julie’s books (Rowboat in a Hurricane, Beyond the Horizon, Lost in Mongolia, and Amazon Extreme)
